How long does placing a dental implant take?
The short answer: placing the implant itself takes one visit and you go home the same day. The whole journey from consultation to finished tooth usually takes 4–9 months, because the implant needs time to fuse with the bone.
The timeline stage by stage
First comes a consultation with an X-ray or 3D image and a treatment plan. If the damaged tooth is still in place, it is extracted 2–6 weeks before the implantation.
Placing the implant is one visit under local anaesthesia. The implant then fuses with the bone: in the lower jaw this takes 3–4 months, in the upper jaw 4–6 months. In the meantime you get a temporary tooth if needed.
After healing, a healing abutment is placed and an impression is taken, which takes 1–2 weeks. The implant crown is made and fitted in another 1–2 weeks.
Why the healing cannot be rushed
An implant holds because the bone grows onto the titanium surface. This is a biological process that cannot be sped up. If the implant is loaded too early, it may fail to fuse with the bone. The waiting time is part of a successful treatment, not a delay.
