Why a front tooth is more demanding

In the front tooth region the outer wall of the jawbone is thin, and after tooth loss the bone there recedes faster than in the back regions. That is why bone grafting is needed more often for a front tooth, so that the implant can be placed in the right position.

The gum line is visible too. The gum papilla between the teeth and the height of the gum have to be similar to the neighbouring tooth, otherwise the crown is sound but conspicuous. The gum tissue is shaped with the healing abutment and the temporary tooth, before the final crown is made.

The third difference is the shade of the crown. The material and the shade are chosen to match the neighbouring teeth. Natural teeth change shade slightly over the years, a crown does not, so the choice of shade is worth discussing separately at the consultation.

Will I be without a tooth during healing

You do not. For a front tooth you get a temporary tooth for the healing period, which covers the gap and also helps shape the gum line. A temporary tooth does not carry chewing load the way the final crown does, so it needs more care.

If the front tooth was lost in an injury

If a whole tooth was knocked out in an injury, keep it in milk and contact us immediately. Broken-off pieces of a tooth are not reattached.

If the tooth is already lost, there is no need to rush into an implant, but waiting a long time does not help either: the longer the site stays empty, the more the bone recedes. We tell you the right time after an examination and a scan.
